The historic chronicles of Babu Anukul Chandra Mukherjee, the legal consecration under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, and the architectural evolution of Purvanchal’s crown jewel.
In the late autumn of 1896, a distinguished assembly of civil officers, railway magistrates, physicians, and intellectuals residing in the Purvanchal region gathered under the spiritual stewardship of Babu Anukul Chandra Mukherjee. Bound by deep devotion to Mother Durga and an ardent desire to foster cultural cohesion among the multi-ethnic populace of Gorakhpur, they installed the first sanctified clay Pratima in the classic Ekchala Daaker Saaj format.
What began as an intimate congregational gathering swiftly burgeoned into the spiritual epicenter of eastern Uttar Pradesh. By 1924, through benevolent grants and citizen endowments, the permanent campus at Golghar Civil Lines was acquired and consecrated under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Master craftsmen were engaged from Bengal to build the grand Natmandir, featuring intricate Burmese teak pillars and colonial terracotta motifs that remain an architectural wonder to this day.
Across 130 consecutive years, even amid historical upheavals, world wars, and post-independence development, the sanctum fires have never dimmed. Today, Durga Bari seamlessly bridges traditional sanctity with modern digital crowd safety, 80G tax governance, and eco-friendly immersion practices.
